The City of Kent's Water Section operates and maintains the water system and infrastructure to deliver clean, safe, and reliable water for domestic, commercial, industrial, and fire protection needs for our customers and visitors now and into the future.

Operation and maintenance of the Kent Water System meets the needs of Kent’s water system customers, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Washington State Department of Health (DOH) regulatory requirements for Kent’s water sources. The water system includes wells, interties and spring supplies; pumping stations, pressure reducing and reservoir facilities; water quality monitoring and treatment operations; maintenance of water mains, valves, water services, fire hydrants, meters, and other appurtenances. It locates and marks all underground city-owned utilities for the 811 One-Call program.

Revised Lead and Copper Rule

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a revised lead and copper rule (LCRR) in 2021  to protect public health by reducing lead and copper levels in drinking water.
The revision requires that a service line inventory for municipalities like the City of Kent to be submitted to the State Department of Health by October 16th, 2024.
After a thorough investigation which involved hundreds of excavations and extensive data collection, the City of Kent is proud to confirm, as we have maintained, that no lead service lines are present in our water system.

Additional Findings

  • Total number of non-lead service connections: 15,886
  • Number of service connections installed pre-1986: 7,420
  • Field investigations were performed on…
    • 1, 073 service connections installed pre-1951
    • 368 randomly selected service connections with unknown classification using statistical method accepted by the EPA
    • Service connections installed pre-1986 for facilities such as schools, daycares, adult living facilities, medical facilities, etc.
  • Total number of service connections where field investigations are performed: 1,490
