What is an RPZ?

Designed to protect residential parking, a Residential Parking Zone - or RPZ - allows only vehicles with valid permits to park along public streets in a designated area. Unpermitted vehicles in the RPZ are subject to a $50 fine.

How can I get additional permits?

Window decal permits will be issued to residents who fill out an application and submit proof of residency. Proof of residency may include a utility bill receipt or driver's license with the resident's name and address within the RPZ.

  • Vehicle license tabs must be current
  • Boats and recreational vehicles are not eligible for permits
  • Permits are valid for four years
  • Permits are free

What Your Permits Will Do

Window decal permits will allow for legal vehicle parking within the RPZ. Permitted vehicles must be owned by residents of North Park. Caregivers, family members, or regular guests may obtain window decal permits from the North Park Resident.

Proper Permit Display

Window decal permits must be displayed on the rear window on the left side. Visitor hang tag permits are valid only if hung from the vehicle's rearview mirror.

What about visitors?

Residents will be provided hang tag permits for visitors to park within the RPZ. Please be sure to have your guests return their permits before leaving.

What your Permits WILL NOT Do

Permits will not exempt vehicles from regularly posted parking restrictions, nor will they exempt vehicles from any other illegal parking. For instance, it will continue to be illegal to park a vehicle:

  • Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant
  • Within 30 feet of a stop sign
  • Within 5 feet of a driveway
  • Within 20 feet of a crosswalk
  • More than 12 inches from a curb
  • Facing the wrong way
  • On a sidewalk or planting strip
  • On the street for longer than 24 hours without being moved
  • Anywhere else where parking is illegal as defined in the Washington State Traffic Code

Misuse of Parking Permits

Visitor permits are only to be used by guests while they are visiting your home.

Misuse of visitor permits may result in a possible 1-year loss of RPZ privileges.

Enforcement

Parking will be restricted 24 hours a day, 7-days a week. Only vehicles with window decal or hangtag permits will be allowed to park in the RPZ.

Parking enforcement will occur randomly during events and on a complaint basis. For example, vehicles that too close or across a resident's driveway are typically only enforced based on a complaint by the resident.

To report a parking violation within the RPZ, please call 911.

Are You Parking Legally or Illegally

Did you know that nearly 1,733 parking tickets are issued every year in Kent? When parking on the street, keep in mind these parking laws. Information on penalties for the following parking violations can be found in Kent City Code (KCC) Title 9 Chapter 38.

Planning to leave your vehicle for a while?

Kent City Code (KCC) 9.38 and the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 46.55.085 state that vehicles parked on the same Kent street for over 24 hours without being moved can be cited and towed with potential tow fees in the hundreds of dollars

Is your vehicle too close to a fire hydrant?

Vehicles parked less than 15 feet from a fire hydrant can be fined. (KCC 938.180)

Can I park my vehicle at an angle on the street?

Vehicles must be parked parallel to the curb or edge of the roadway, in the direction of authorized traffic movement. Angled parking is prohibited unless otherwise marked. Vehicles, not parking parallel are subject to a $50 fine. (KCC 9.38.185)
