Climate Sustainability

Our environment and the climate are changing.  The question is, how can the City of Kent, with a population of 137,900 people in a country with a population of 336 million, reduce the potential for human impact on the environment and climate and prepare for the effects of future change.

There is a lot we are doing here in the City of Kent, and there is a lot we are planning for. Kent is home to one of the largest warehousing/industrial districts on the west coast, supplying the entire region and beyond with manufactured goods, warehousing space, and employment.

To the east and west of the Kent Valley, concrete and asphalt give way to green hillsides and residential areas, a robust parks system, and natural open spaces.  In relation to environmental sustainability and climate resiliency, Kent’s natural and built landscape creates unique challenges and opportunities.

These pages explain what the city is doing to reduce the potential for human impact on the environment, preserve and improve our natural environment, and establish climate resilience: the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to hazardous events, trends, or disturbances related to climate.
