The seven-member Kent City Council is the legislative body for the City of Kent, Washington. Besides establishing policies and regulations, the Council approves financial expenditures and the City's biennial budget.

Elected by Kent voters during odd-numbered years, Kent City Councilmembers serve four-year terms. They are non-partisan, meaning they do not represent political parties. They are elected at-large, meaning they do not represent a specific geographical area within the City of Kent. All Councilmembers receive a monthly salary, plus reimbursement for any expenses.

  • State law provides that all correspondence sent to elected officials (including email) is public record. Any correspondence sent to the City Council will be disclosed to any person who requests it, unless exempt from disclosure under state law.

 Meetings are open to the public, open for public comment during the  Public Comment portion of the agenda and is televised live on Comcast Cable TV21, at KentTV21.com and on YouTube.

  • To sign-up to receive notifications of meetings, meeting agendas and agenda materials, visit the Kent City Council meetings page, and select "Register" in the upper-right hand corner. Complete the requested information and accept the terms of service to create an account. From the distribution list menu, choose the items for which you want to receive updates. Have questions? Contact the Clerk's  Office at CityClerk@KentWA.gov.
  • If you wish to provide comment to the Mayor and Council, please contact the City Clerk by 4 p.m. on the day of the meeting at 253-856-5725 or CityClerk@KentWA.gov.  Alternatively, you may email the Mayor and Council at Mayor@KentWA.gov and CityCouncil@KentWA.gov. Emails are not read into the record.

Council Workshops

  • Held at 5:15 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays (unless the Council meeting starts at 5 p.m.)
  • For informal discussion between the Council and staff on various topics
  • Meetings are open to the public, but not open for public comment

Council Committees

The Kent City Council adopted Resolution No. 2062 on May 16, 2023, returning to a Committee of the Whole structure where all councilmembers serve on a Committee of the Whole in lieu of three councilmembers serving on several separate committees. The committee meetings are for initial discussion of business items between the Council and staff.
