The easiest and most cost-effective means of extending our water supply is to use less water. You can reduce water use many ways, such as installing water-saving devices on faucets and toilets and choosing water-efficient appliances. Rebates for water-efficient washing machines and toilets are available to customers who pay their water bill to the City of Kent.

For more ways to save, check out Puget Sound Energy’s rebate program.

Water Conservation Tips

Water conservation is always encouraged, whether we are experiencing a drought or above normal rainfall.

Here are some simple, effective conservation ideas:
  • Take shorter showers and replace your showerhead with a low-flow showerhead.
    • 1-2 minutes less per shower is 100+ gallons of water saved per month!
  •  Handwashing dishes with the faucet running uses 16 more gallons than a dishwasher.
  • Only operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers when they are fully loaded. Set the water level for the size load you are washing.
  • Replace your old, high-water-use toilet with a low flow toilet.
  • If it's yellow let it mellow! Consider waiting to flush until you need to. Toilets use nearly 30% of water in a home each year.
  • Consider drought-tolerant plants as you plan your garden this year.
  • Fix leaks! 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.
  • Save 4 gallons of water by simply turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Do not wash your vehicles at home; use commercial car washes that recycle water.
    • Car washes use 60% less water on average compared to washing by hand.
