Within the Public Works Operations Division we have the Signs and Pavement Markings Section and Special Emphasis Section.

Signs and Pavement Markings coordinates the installation and maintenance of all street signs and markings.  These are very important for the safety of bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists navigating the streets in Kent.

Special Emphasis works diligently in maintaining the city right of way and structures.  Special Emphasis is responsible for removing and cleaning up garbage, illegal dumping and illegal camping debris located on public property.  In addition to this the section covers graffiti on City structures and installs the City's "No Dumping" signs.

Signs and Pavement Markings

Pavement markings consist of traffic islands & c-curbs, RPMs (raised pavement markers) and centerlines, lane dividers and fog lines.  Thermoplastic markings are used for crosswalks, stop bars and arrows designating lanes for turning traffic. We assist Transportation Engineering with the assessment of all of these items for annual maintenance.

Our section maintains around 20,000 signs throughout the City of Kent.  This maintenance includes cleaning and straightening of signs and pruning vegetation that is blocking the visibility of signs.  We are constantly checking areas for damaged or missing signs to ensure safe travel for everyone in Kent.

We have adopted the Sign Retro Reflectivity Replacement Program which we started in 2015. Retro reflectivity means that the light projected on the sign reflects directly back to the direction of the light (in the case of drivers, this is the headlights) making the signs more visible at night and in bad weather.

Special Emphasis Section

Within the Public Works Operations Streets division there is the Special Emphasis Crew who cleans up roughly 200,000 lbs. of litter every year.   They also pick up and remove roughly 1,300 bags worth of debris off the City's right-of-way each year.
