Since 1997, the Kent Community Garden has yielded fresh produce and crops, created a sense of community and provided the benefits of physical activity for many hundreds of gardeners!

Program Details

REGISTRATION OPENS: Early registration opens February 7, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. for returning gardners in good standing.
Public registration opens March 6, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.
WHEN: April 6 - October 27, 2024
WHERE: 5th Avenue N and W James Street (behind ShoWare)
REQUIRED ANNUAL ORIENTATION: Monday, March 25, 2024 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Kent Commons or April 1, 2024 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Kent Commons.
PLOT SIZE: Approximately 7.5' x 19' (400 sq. ft.)
PLOTS: Each gardner is limited to one (1) plot for the 2024 Community Gardening Season.
COST: $55 rental/water fee

Previous year's gardeners in good standing can register early for the same plot.

SAFETY

Always lock the street corner gate behind you when entering or leaving the garden, no matter how quick your trip.
Report an inoperative lock immediately to Kent Commons at 253-856-5100.
Never unlock the gate for, or give the lock combination to, someone you don’t know.
Daily hours are dawn to dusk. No night gardening is allowed.
Use tools only for their intended purpose.
Power tools are strictly prohibited.
Supervise children closely. Do not allow them to run, climb or throw anything.
All pets are prohibited. Do not bring any animals into the garden.
Keep the paths and common areas clear of weeds, trash, tools, and debris.
Immediately report broken tools, theft, vandalism or trespassing to the Kent Commons at 253-856-5100.

Participation

RULES OF PARTICIPATION

Keep your contact information up to date. Call the Kent Commons at (253) 856-5100 with any updates.
Attend the Community Garden Orientation.
Cooperate with the Community Garden Leadership Group. Details at Orientation.
Create paths with city’s wood chips. All plots must be accessible by path on all sides.
Prepare and begin working your plot(s) no later than May 15 or within 6 weeks of registration.
Beginning May 23 and throughout the season, unworked plots will be considered abandoned and advertised as available.
No refunds issued for abandoned plots.
Sprinklers and soaker hoses are not allowed. Use hose nozzles and watering cans to conserve water.
WEED OR COVER YOUR ENTIRE PLOT(S). Do not let your plot(s) get overgrown.
Do not toss plants and weeds into other plots or out into the grass. Put them in the yard waste structure.
Keep all plots separated by paths. Do not adjoin plots or remove any paths.
Replenish & maintain the paths with the City’s wood chips. Request more chips by calling (253) 856-5100.
Clean the shared tools after use and always return them to the shed.
Keep the tool shed tidy.
Water or wet ONLY your own plot(s).
Pick or harvest ONLY your own plot(s).
Do not create shade on other plots.
Prevent spreading plants from invading other plots.
Clear everything from your plot(s) no later than 2:00 p.m. on the last Sunday in October.
Leaving your plot(s) uncleared will result in loss of pre-registration privileges.

Conservation

CONSERVATION

Use only organic gardening products. Never use synthetic chemical herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, or soil amendments.
Check your product at OMRI.org before using it if unsure.
Sprinklers and soaker hoses are not allowed. Use hose nozzles and watering cans to conserve water.
Do not plant invasive or noxious plants of any kind.
Never use tires or treated wood.
Pack out all trash. Never use the Bishop’s Storehouse dumpsters.
Place ONLY garden vegetation in the yard waste structure. Pack out all processed food and trash.
Never harm or trap rabbits, birds, or any other wildlife in the garden. Use fencing, pinwheels, decoys, etc. to deter them.

Conduct

CONDUCT

Be considerate and courteous to everyone, always.
Use caution and practice safety in the garden.
Do not use crude, vulgar, or offensive language.
Tobacco in all forms is prohibited at all times.
Alcohol and other intoxicants, including cannabis, are prohibited at all times.
Cannabis cultivation is prohibited. No exceptions.
Use earphones, not speakers.
Do not sell anything grown in the garden.
Do share your extra bounty freely with family, friends and neighbors!

The City's Role

THE ROLE OF KENT PARKS

Prepare the ground by rototilling the entire garden before opening day.
Measure plots and stake boundaries before opening day, and post name signs at plots.
Provide access to water, hoses, wood chips for paths, and a portable restroom.
Replenish the supply of wood chips for paths upon request.
Empty the rock bins or yard waste structure upon request.

First Deadline to Work Plots

Plots must be worked no later than 6 weeks from gardener's registration date.

Throughout the season, gardeners are allowed up to six (6) weeks from their registration date to prepare and begin working their plot before it is considered abandoned.

Abandoned plots will be offered to waitlisters and/or the public. No Refunds are given to gardeners who abandon plots.

Gardeners in violation will be notified directly to attend to their plot immediately. Gardeners are responsible for keeping their contact information up to date at KentWA.gov/Garden.

Plots left unworked after direct notification to the gardener will be considered abandoned and offered for re-rental.
No refunds are given for abandoned plots. Renters who abandon plots are excluded from the garden for the rest of the season.
