Cultural Awareness and Racial Equity

CARE (Cultural Awareness and Racial Equity) is an Employee Resource and Advisory Group aligned with the City of Kent mission, values, and goals.

CARE is an employee-led, internal, voluntary effort that is complementary to the Mayor’s initiatives on Race & Equity. CARE provides employees with the time and space to connect with each other and to put their race and equity learning into practice.

CARE seeks to:

  • Foster a diverse and inclusive workplace.

  • Engage in “brave” space conversations.

  • Gather input from employees on topics to support learning.

CARE provides:

  • A "brave" space for all employees to learn about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) topics.

  • Monthly meetings to connect with coworkers, discuss lived experiences, and support workplace improvement .

  • A growing collection of DEI resources (videos, articles, books and more) for employees to explore.

The Cultural Awareness and Racial Equity (CARE) employee resource group will be holding a workshop during the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) national conference on April 20th, 2022, in Portland, Oregon. GARE is a national network of government working to achieve racial equity and advance opportunities for all. The Alliance is a joint project of the new Race Forward  and the Othering and Belonging Institute.

Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation united with Center for Social Inclusion in 2017 to become the new Race Forward.

Founded in 1981, Race Forward brings systemic analysis and an innovative approach to complex race issues to help people take effective action toward racial equity. Founded in 2002, CSI catalyzes community, government, and other institutions to dismantle structural racial inequity and create equitable outcomes for all.

The CARE group will provide practical strategies for other small- to medium sized municipalities struggling with implementing GARE’s best practices due to constraints on resources, capacity, and support. Learn how to make ERGs the hubs for normalizing difficult conversations while setting a foundation for positive organizational change.
