The Kent Municipal Court is a court of limited jurisdiction.  The Court hears and adjudicates criminal misdemeanor cases as well as traffic and other civil and parking infractions occurring in within Kent's city limits. The court also hears requests for Domestic Violence Protection Orders.

Kent Municipal Court is committed to excellence by providing fair, accessible and timely resolution to all cases. We hold individuals accountable for their actions to insure the safety and well being of our citizens while recognizing and preserving individual rights through due process and maintaining the rule of law. We are committed to respecting the dignity and diversity of all participants that come before the Court.  

 

NOTE:

As of January 1, 2013, Maple Valley Municipal Court proceedings will be held at the Kent Municipal Court. For more information about your court case, court hours and the court calendar, call 253-856-5730. 

Jury Duty

Jury Information Line: 253-856-4787

Jurors serving Kent Municipal Court are summoned randomly and must be residents of King County.  

 

If you received a Jury Summons from Kent Municipal Court you must call the Jury Information Line at 253-856-4787 for further instructions. 

 

Do not report to the Court unless instructed to do so.  

 

YOUR APPEARANCE IS MANDATORY. IF YOU FAIL TO APPEAR, CONTEMPT PROCEEDINGS MAY BE BROUGHT AGAINST YOU. IT IS A CRIME FOR ANY PERSON SUMMONED FOR JURY SERVICE TO INTENTIONALLY FAIL TO APPEAR AS DIRECTED (RCW 2.36.170). 

 

Excusal from jury service is limited and shall be allowed only upon a showing of undue hardship, extreme inconvenience, public necessity, or other reason deemed sufficient by the court for a period of time the court deems necessary (RCW 2.36.100).  Please read your Jury Summons for information regarding how to request an exemption from Jury Service. 

Traffic infractions and parking tickets

Traffic infractions or other non-traffic civil infractions:

If you receive a Notice of Infraction you have been charged with one or more traffic or other civil infractions.  Please read the front and back (if applicable) of the infraction for instructions. You must respond to the court, either in person or in writing, within 15 days of the date of infraction if personally served. If the notice was served by mail, you must respond by the due date as listed on the Notification you received. 

 

If you fail to respond by the required time period, a failure to respond fee of $52 will be added. The Department of Licensing will also be notified of the failure to respond to a traffic infraction and may take administrative action to suspend your driving privileges. Failure to pay or respond to a non-traffic civil infraction may result in the filing of criminal charges against you. 

 

Any unpaid balance will be forwarded to a collection agency.  

 

If you receive a School Zone Speeding Notice of Infraction follow the instructions on the notice.

 

Parking tickets:

If you receive a Non-Traffic Parking Infraction you have been charged with one or more parking violations. Please read the front and back (if applicable) of the infraction for instructions. You must respond to the court, either in person or in writing, within 15 days of the date of infraction. If the notice was served by mail, you must respond by the due date as listed on the Notification you received. 

 

Any unpaid balance will be forwarded to a collection agency.  You may be unable to renew your vehicle license tabs until all fines are paid. 

Criminal citations

Criminal citations require that you appear in court

If you receive a Notice of Case Setting from Kent Municipal Court, you have been charged with a crime and your appearance in court is mandatory.  Failure to appear at your hearing will result in a warrant being issued for your arrest.  

  

Public defender services: 

If you have been charged with a criminal offense filed with the Kent Municipal Court you may qualify for a court appointed lawyer depending on your financial circumstances. If you wish to determine your eligibility for a court appointed lawyer, you must appear in person at the Kent Municipal Court on a Monday or Tuesday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – noon and 1 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. to meet with the public defense screener.

Paying court fees or tickets

Acceptable methods of payment are: cash, check, money order, Mastercard or VISA. Credit card payments are accepted in person or by phone at 253-856-5730. 

 

When paying by check, please make it payable to "Kent Municipal Court." Include the citation or case number in the memo section of the check so your account will be properly credited.   

 

Note: Personal checks are not accepted for bail, bench warrant fees or FTA fees
