Class description

CERT Introduction

  • Learn the history of disaster response and how the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program was developed.
  • Become knowledgeable on the purpose of CERT and be given a course introduction.
  • Be familiar with the Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Guest speaker with disaster experience.

Unit 1: Disaster Preparedness

  • Familiarity with types of disaster that can occur and ways to prepare.
  • Knowledge on being self sufficient for 72 hours.
  • Training in functional areas specifics to CERTS.

Units 2 & 8: Fire Safety and Terrorism and CERT

  • Explain the role of CERT in a fire safety and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Identify and reduce fire and hazardous materials risks in home and workplace.
  • Conduct basic size-up for fire and hazardous materials.
  • Understand basic safety precautions.
  • Extinguish small fires using fire extinguishers.
  • Define terrorism using the FBI definition.
  • Identify terrorism targets within your community.
  • Identify the characteristics of B-NICE weapons.
  • Identify CERT operating procedures for a terrorist incident.
  • Describe actions to take following a suspected terrorism incident.

Unit 3: Disaster Medical I

  • Identifying the “killers,” airway obstruction, excessive bleeding, and shock.
  • Applying techniques for opening the airway, controlling bleeding, and treating shock.
  • Learn principles of triage and how to conduct triage evaluations.
  • Hands on learning and skill development.

Unit 4: Disaster Medical II

  • Public health concerns.
  • Organization of disaster medical operations.
  • Establishing treatment areas.
  • Conducting victim assessments.
  • Treating injuries.

Unit 5: Light Search and Rescue

  • Personal safety equipment.
  • Search and rescue operations and priorities.
  • Assessing damage and levels of damage.
  • Search methods.
  • Techniques and hands-on practice used to lift very heavy objects

Units 6 & 7: CERT Organization and Disaster Psychology

  • Post disaster emotional environment and stress relievers.
  • Organization and documentation requirements by CERT members.
  • Phases of a crisis.

Unit 9: Course Review and Disaster Simulation

  • Final review of the 7-week CERT course.
  • Apply your newly learned CERT skills by participating in a simulated disaster scenario.
  • Attendance at this event is mandatory for CERT class graduation.
