Kent's parks, trails and open spaces continue to provide ample beauty and recreation opportunities for visitors, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Parks staff, public and private granting agencies, corporate support and our wonderful volunteers.  We make every effort to keep accurate records, so please advise us if there is an error. On behalf of Kent Parks, Recreation & Community Services, we thank the groups and individuals listed below: companies, service clubs and faith-based organizations, scouts and their leaders, and students earning community service hours.  You make Kent the vibrant, caring city it is.

  • Washington Department of Natural Resources' Community Forestry Program - $9,900 grant to initiate a GIS-based street tree inventory.
  • Kent Sunrise Rotary and District 5030 - $3,930 grant for two ADA-accessible play structures for Lake Meridian Park.
  • Kent Parks Foundation - $762.22 from Dancing with the Stars proceeds; $71.22 from two donors

March:

  • Ben DuBois, Troop 449, restored an area at Campus Park and planted/mulched 250 native plants.
  • Cameron Lindsay, Troop 888, installed 200’ of new gravel trail at Morrill Meadows’ Off-leash Dog Park.
  • Bobby Belter, Troop 480, removed an old shed and laid out the plots at the Community Garden P-patch.

April - June:

  • Eli McMeen, Troop 407, constructed 100' of new ADA gravel trail and restored an adjacent wooded area at Tudor Square Park, adding native shrubs and groundcover.
  • Spencer Snow, Troop 402, installed 50' of gravel trail and added gravel around the obstacle course at Morrill Meadows' Off-leash Dog Park.

July - September:

  • Neil Cochran, Troop 474, constructed 100' of new ADA gravel trail and restored an adjacent wooded area at Tudor Square Park, adding more native shrubs and groundcover.
  • Brandon DuBois, Troop 449, installed 260' of gravel trail to complete the loop at Morrill Meadows' Off-leash Dog Park.

October - December:

  • Dennis Liu, Troop 407, constructed 100' of new ADA gravel trail and restored an adjacent wooded area at Tudor Square Park, adding native plants.
  • Tristan Oakes, Troop 474, restored an area at Campus Park and planted/mulched 235 native plants.
  • Matt Suelzle, Troop 237, constructed 100' of new ADA gravel trail and restored an adjacent wooded area at Tudor Square Park, adding native plants.
  • Nathan Hansen, Troop 392, researched, constructed and installed homes for pollinating Mason Bees at three park locations.
  • Daniel Lewis, Troop 888, constructed the final 200' of ADA gravel trail at Tudor Square Park.
  • Eric Fletcher, Troop 888, restored an area at West Fenwick Park and planted/mulched 35 native plants
  • Caden Wilkes, Troop 402, restored an area at West Fenwick Park and planted/mulched 71 native plants

2012 Volunteer Contributions, First Quarter:

Between January 1 and March 31, a total of 2,212 adults and youth contributed 1,706.1 hours volunteering for Kent Parks. This includes two Eagle Scout projects plus elementary school children, teachers and others from 17 schools who took part in our national-award-winning Plant the Planet program, planting 1,940 native trees and shrubs.  Green Kent Partnership stewards held work parties at Lake Meridian, Morrill Meadows and Campus Parks plus the Park Meridian wetland. A special Green Kent planting event was held at Lake Fenwick Park, sponsored by Pearl Jam (the band’s Stone Gossard attended, too!). Another Green Kent Steward orientation was held in March and the seven volunteers are now selecting their work sites. Find out more about the Green Kent Partnership: www.GreenKent.org.

Volunteer Contributions, Second Quarter:

Arbor Day volunteers celebrate a great morning's work at West Fenwick 2012 Arbor Day VolunteersPark 


Between April 1 and June 30, a total of 539 volunteers contributed 1,467.5 hours, valued at $20,545, to improve Kent Parks. Earth Day was held again at Park Orchard Park, where volunteers removed another 2,100 square feet of blackberries and ivy.  At West Fenwick Park for Arbor Day, volunteers planted, mulched and watered 130 native trees and shrubs after clearing 7,963 sq. ft. of invasive weeds. National Trails Day was held at Lake Fenwick Park, and volunteers spread eight cubic yards of gravel to refurbish the east ridge trail. Our Green Kent Stewards were also very busy, leading 16 separate work parties at park sites all over the city.

Volunteer Contributions, Third Quarter:

Between July 1 and September 30, there were 16 Green Kent Partnership-related events, including training conducted by EarthCorps staff for volunteers learning how to install monitoring plots where restoration will soon begin. LDS and other churches participated in another Day of Service on Sept. 8: 201 volunteers worked at the Senior Center and Earthworks Park. Corporate and service club volunteer events involved Kvichak Marine Industries, REI, Hiram College Alumni, Kiwanis Club of Kent and Weyerhaeuser, the latter of whose volunteers spread 45 yds. of chips and removed two truckloads of blackberries at Glenn Nelson Park on Sept. 11. National Public Lands Day attracted 73 volunteers to Park Orchard Park to continue clearing the wooded area. The total number of hours contributed by volunteers was 1,595, which translates to a value of $22,330!

Volunteer Contributions, Fourth Quarter:Mayor and Stewards, Green Kent Day

Between October 1 and December 31, there were 15 Green Kent Partnership work parties organized by our Stewards and five Eagle Scout projects that involved restoration and planting. Other Green Kent events included ReLeaf at Clark Lake Park on October 13th, with 73 volunteers, the first annual Green Kent Day on October 27th at Morrill Meadows Park and the Green River Natural Resources Area, with a total of 201 volunteers, and a special planting event at Earthworks Park on November 3rd, with 49 volunteers. In addition to these events, Kent Covenant Church volunteers did a litter clean-up along the Interurban Trail and classes in five elementary schools planted 100 native trees and shrubs at Clark Lake Park as part of the Plant the Planet program.
