Economic Development

Kent is the third largest city in King County with a population of 124,435.  Incorporated in 1890, the city’s population has doubled since 1990 incorporating tens of thousands of new households and businesses while retaining the historic character of its downtown and oldest neighborhoods. The city encompasses much of the Kent Industrial Valley, an area where a half-century legacy of outer space vehicle innovation—the first lunar rover was developed at the Kent Space Center—persists to this day. Advanced technical research and development continues at Boeing’s Defense, Space, and Security operations in Kent and at the main facilities of Blue Origin, a private space vehicle development company.

A key part of Seattle's global trade, the Kent Valley is the fourth-largest center for manufacturing and distribution in the United States. Many of Puget Sound's most distinguished companies choose to locate key functions in Kent: from Starbucks' original coffee roasting plant to Amazon's next generation fulfillment center. Advanced manufacturers like the Hexcel Corporation, Carlisle Interconnect Technologies, Flow International, the Omax Corporation, and Hytek Finishes headquarter are in the Kent Valley, as are the corporate offices of outdoor retail leader R.E.I.
